Gambian Scholar Warns Politicians Against Ethnic Division

Prominent Gambian scholar and imam Sheikh Fakebba Ceesay recently addressed the heated political discourse surrounding upcoming elections, warning against the use of ethnic division by politicians. Sheikh Fakebba Ceesay commented on the recent heated political discourse in the run up to the elections later this year. Sheikh Ceesay stated that leaders who engage in such rhetoric "will face consequences because they are going to be accountable in accordance with their deeds and speeches in the next world." He emphasized the importance of national unity, urging citizens not to be swayed by divisive tactics. "We are a country of diverse ethnic groups living together in peace and we must not allow politicians ignorant of even their own religion to divide and make us believe we are enemies of one another," Sheikh Ceesay added.

Religious Guidance on Unity

Sheikh Fakebba Ceesay asserted that politicians propagating ethnic divisions act in disobedience of God. He emphasized that such actions contradict religious principles guiding unity and peace within communities. Ceesay stated that politicians guilty of propagating ethnic divisions are acting in disobedience of God. He elaborated that such disregard for religious tenets not only harms society but also carries significant spiritual implications for those in leadership positions.

Ceesay further stated that political leaders must recognize that their responsibilities extend beyond the immediate temporal sphere. He indicated that politics is not solely concerned with worldly affairs, implying a spiritual accountability for their actions and rhetoric. Ceesay stated that politicians must realize that politics is not just about this world, but also about the hereafter, where their deeds will be judged. This perspective notes a profound moral dimension to political leadership, urging a consideration of long-term spiritual consequences alongside immediate political gains.

Call for National Cohesion

Sheikh Fakebba Ceesay urged his congregation to maintain unity and resist attempts by politicians to foster division based on tribal lines. He emphasized the importance of safeguarding national cohesion, particularly in the lead-up to political events. Ceesay urged his congregation to stay united and not allow politicians to divide them along tribal lines, stressing that such divisions undermine the very fabric of national identity. Ceesay, a native of Kiang, showed the shared heritage and peaceful coexistence among Gambia's diverse ethnic groups. He advised citizens not to allow political rhetoric to undermine the country's social fabric. His message noted the need for collective responsibility in preserving peace and solidarity within the nation, asserting that a unified populace is essential for the country's stability and progress. He called upon all Gambians to prioritize their shared identity over any attempts to create discord.

Accountability for Divisive Politics

Sheikh Fakebba Ceesay elaborated on the religious imperative against divisive rhetoric, explaining that Prophet Muhammad issued serious warnings to Muslims regarding the propagation of racial or ethnic divisions. Ceesay explained that Prophet Muhammad seriously warned Muslims against propagating racial or ethnic divisions, emphasizing the gravity of such actions within Islamic teachings. Ceesay showed that such teachings prohibit actions that would fragment communities based on tribal or ancestral lines. He presented this religious guidance as a foundational principle that political leaders and citizens alike should adhere to, especially within a multi-ethnic society like The Gambia. This principle, he noted, serves as a powerful deterrent against any form of discrimination or tribalism.

The scholar's remarks suggest that politicians who engage in ethnic polarization are not only undermining national unity but are also acting contrary to fundamental religious doctrines. Ceesay emphasized that the Prophet's warnings serve as a clear directive for maintaining peace and cohesion among diverse groups. He further indicated that these religious tenets call for a rejection of any form of discrimination or superiority based on ethnicity, advocating instead for mutual respect and understanding as cornerstones of societal harmony. Ceesay's explanation positions his warning against divisive politics as rooted in established religious principles meant to foster collective well-being, thereby adding a spiritual weight to his call for national unity and responsible political conduct.
