Spanish NGOs Boost Gambia's Eye Care Access with Major Donation

Spanish non-governmental organization Ser Humano, supported by VITHAS EUROCANARIAS, recently donated more than 700 pairs of glasses and a medical machine to the Tallinding North community clinic in The Gambia. This significant contribution aims to profoundly enhance eye care access for local residents, addressing a critical health need within the community. The partnership between the Spanish NGO and VITHAS EUROCANARIAS shows a commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure in the region.

The donation from Ser Humano, facilitated with key assistance from VITHAS EUROCANARIAS, specifically included over 700 glasses designed to address a wide range of vision needs within the community. These glasses are expected to provide immediate relief and improved sight for many individuals. In addition to the eyewear, a specialized medical machine was supplied, intended to significantly bolster the diagnostic and treatment capabilities at the Tallinding North community clinic, allowing for more full eye examinations and interventions. This dual contribution of corrective lenses and diagnostic equipment is poised to make a substantial difference in the quality of eye care available to the local population.

Clinic's New Chapter

The Tallinding North clinic, a vital community health facility, began its operations just four months ago, marking a new chapter in local healthcare provision. Its inauguration was a significant event, overseen by the Ward Councillor, noting its importance to the community. Dr. Kalifa Manneh, who is responsible for the clinic and serves as its head, warmly welcomed the recent donation of medical equipment and glasses, recognizing their immense value. The facility, despite having been active for a limited period since its establishment, is now expected to significantly expand its range of services, particularly in ophthalmology, due to these new, invaluable resources. The contribution from the Spanish NGOs is anticipated to significantly bolster the clinic's capacity to provide essential eye care services, reaching more patients and offering more advanced diagnostics. Dr. Manneh’s acknowledgement shows the immediate and long-term positive impact these resources are projected to have on patient care and overall community well-being within Tallinding North. The clinic's relatively recent establishment positions this donation not merely as an enhancement, but as a foundational step for the development and strengthening of its eye care department, allowing it to serve a broader segment of the population with improved services.

Addressing Community Needs

Ward Councillor for Tallinding North, Baboucarr Mansally, stated emphatically that the donated eyeglasses would address a long-standing and deeply felt need within the community. Mansally expressed profound gratitude for the contribution, noting its potential to transform lives. "I want to also add my voice on VITHAS EUROCANARIAS. We cannot thank them enough. Definitely, these glasses are going to pave the way for us, particularly our people who have short vision. These lenses are going to help them," Mansally said, emphasizing the direct benefit to residents. He further noted the persistent challenges faced by residents with visual impairments, recounting personal interactions that showed the urgency of this need. "We have been receiving complaints. There are people who normally tell me, Councillor, you always forget about us. Us who don’t have vision, our vision is short. It is very difficult for them to see," Mansally added, painting a vivid picture of the daily struggles faced by many. He concluded his remarks by emphasizing the overwhelmingly positive and transformative impact of the donation. "But today, having this from VITHAS EUROCANARIAS is going to help the people of The Gambia, particularly in Tallinding North, to see clearly and improve their quality of life." The Councillor's statements showed the profound community impact and the relief this donation brings to those who have long struggled with impaired vision.

Donor's Motivation and Future

Mr Francisco, the Director General of Ser Humano, personally handed over the donated items to the Tallinding North clinic during the weekend, marking the official transfer of these vital resources. He specified that the full contribution included "more than 700 glasses and a machine for the testing of the glasses" for the benefit of the residents of Tallinding North and, by extension, The Gambia. Mr Francisco expressed his immense happiness regarding the donation, noting that Tallinding North was a community with a clear and pressing requirement for these specific resources. He further affirmed his unwavering intention "to bring more next time," signaling a commitment to ongoing support and future collaborations.

The facilitation of this significant donation by VITHAS EUROCANARIAS was a new development, according to Mr Francisco. He explained the genesis of their involvement, stating, "They gave it to me because they were impressed with our work when they saw the clinic in the newspaper," noting the power of visibility and the reputation Ser Humano had built. Mr Francisco showed the critical and immediate need for the glasses, remarking on the daily challenges faced by those with vision problems. "The people cannot see, cannot go to the clinic after Monday. We have a lot of glasses for everyone," he explained, illustrating the urgency and broad scope of the vision issues in the community. He emphasized his role in the process as primarily a facilitator and transporter of these essential goods, stating with humility, "I am only the transport. It’s really that people take from every people glass for Gambia people." Mr Francisco concluded by expressing deep satisfaction with the clinic's impact and its role in local healthcare, saying, "I feel very happy because people use the clinic. People don’t need to go far to access healthcare. We have our clinic now, I am very happy." His words reflected the profound personal fulfillment derived from seeing the community benefit directly from the efforts of Ser Humano and its partners.
