Talib Bensouda has been confirmed as the opposition's flag-bearer after Professor Sidat Yaffa withdrew from contention following internal negotiations, leaving Bensouda unopposed. The decision concluded talks held over the weekend by the Coalition Taskforce Mediation Committee, which had aimed to select a single candidate.
Bensouda stated, "This is not a victory for one party. It is a victory for the idea that Gambians and political forces with different histories, identities and perspectives can come together around one national purpose." He added that the coalition remains "open to those who withdrew" and emphasized the importance of uniting for the national interest.
Contenders Withdraw Amidst Disagreements
Essa Faal, one of the top contenders, withdrew his candidacy hours before the selection process commenced. He cited irreconcilable differences in negotiations and alleged irregularities, including inducements for his withdrawal. Faal’s departure left only Talib Bensouda and Professor Sidat Yaffa as the two remaining contestants in the selection process. The initial talks had involved more than 20 parties and groups aiming to form a united front. The Coalition Taskforce Mediation Committee ultimately facilitated the selection of a single candidate from the reduced field.
Bensouda's Coalition Support
Kanifing Mayor Talib Bensouda, leader of the Unite party, was confirmed as the opposition's flag-bearer following his selection. Bensouda commented on his confirmation, stating, "This is not a victory for one party. It is a victory for the idea that Gambians and political forces with different histories, identities and perspectives can come together around one national purpose." He added, "Our differences are real, but so is the national purpose that brings us together. The task before us is now clear: take this coalition to the Gambian people, earn their trust and build a government that puts national interest above party, personal and sectional interest." Bensouda also indicated the coalition remains "open to those who withdrew." However, the Gambia Sustainable & Environmental Movement (GSEM) issued a statement asserting it has not endorsed Bensouda, despite being listed as a group that had backed him.
Mayor's Vision for Unity
Mr. Bensouda has drew support from several political entities, including Pastef-Gambia, the People’s Rights Party, Forward Gambia, the National Reform Congress, the Gambia Movement for Progress, Save The Gambia, and the National Development Association. His Unite party previously formalized a partnership with the National Unity Party, led by Lamin J Darbo.
Looking Ahead
The United Democratic Party (UDP), Alliance for Democracy and Development (ADD), People's Progressive Party (PPP), and People's Alliance Party (PAP), among other entities, withdrew their participation from the selection process. These parties cited fundamental disagreements over the selection model, as well as concerns regarding the governance and voting processes established for the coalition. Their withdrawal occurred prior to the final confirmation of Talib Bensouda as the flag-bearer. The departures show ongoing challenges in consolidating a unified opposition front, despite Bensouda's stated commitment to an inclusive coalition. The remaining coalition members will now proceed with their campaign, aiming to gain public trust while potentially seeking to re-engage the withdrawing parties.
