The Gambia is actively pursuing deeper cooperation with Nigeria's tourism industry to increase tourist arrivals and foster new business partnerships. This initiative aims to strengthen economic ties between the two West African nations. A three-day expo, scheduled from September 13 to September 15, is facilitating these discussions. The event brings together key tourism stakeholders, including policymakers, national tourism boards, travel agents, airlines, and tour operators, to explore collaborative opportunities. This strategic move by The Gambia shows its commitment to leveraging its tourism potential and forging stronger economic links with Nigeria. The core objective is to achieve increased tourist arrivals from Nigeria and establish more strong business partnerships within the tourism sector.

Leveraging Existing Ties

Mr. Abdoulie Jobe stated that tourism offers a pathway to transform the historical, cultural, and people-to-people connections between Nigeria and The Gambia into concrete economic opportunities. He emphasized the potential for mutual benefit through enhanced collaboration in the tourism sector, noting how these strong existing ties can be converted into tangible economic growth. Mrs. Ida Njie, Director-General of the Gambia Tourism Board, affirmed the country's objective of establishing more strong cooperation with Nigerian tour operators and travel agents. The Gambia is actively seeking to expand its reach within the Nigerian travel market, aiming to attract more visitors and facilitate easier travel between the two nations. Mrs. Njie's statement reinforced the strategic importance of engaging Nigerian travel professionals to bridge the two tourism markets effectively.

Strengthening Connectivity

ValueJet has been operating flights between Nigeria and The Gambia for 16 months, establishing a direct air link between the two nations. The airline currently maintains three weekly flights on this route, facilitating consistent travel and trade. This consistent air service is key for fostering the desired increase in tourist traffic and business interactions. In a move to further enhance regional connectivity, ValueJet extended its Banjul route to include Accra, Ghana, in May, broadening its network beyond Nigeria and The Gambia. This expansion signifies a growing commitment to regional air travel, making The Gambia more accessible to a wider West African audience, including Nigerian travelers. The sustained operation of these flights demonstrates the viability and demand for direct connections between these key West African destinations.

Call for Action

The Gambian Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mr. Abdoulie Jobe, issued a call for action during an engagement with Nigerian tourism stakeholders at the 22nd Akwaaba Travel Market Expo in Lagos. Mr. Jobe stated that tourism offers an opportunity to build on existing foundations, translating friendship into "greater movement of people, stronger businesses, partnerships and shared economic opportunities." The Gambian government expressed its desire for more Nigerian visitors, emphasizing that Nigerian travel professionals could act as a key link between the two tourism markets. This appeal notes the key role that Nigerian tour operators and travel agents are expected to play in promoting The Gambia as a preferred destination. Mr. Jobe added, "This will not happen by chance. It will happen through partnership, commitment and action," showing the need for concerted efforts from all stakeholders to achieve these ambitious goals.

Minister's Vision

Mr. Abdoulie Jobe, The Gambian Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, additionally urged Nigerian media practitioners to enhance their support for African tourism narratives. He emphasized the importance of broader coverage that notes the continent's rich cultural heritage and authentic travel experiences. This appeal was part of a wider effort to foster stronger ties and promote The Gambia as a prime destination for Nigerian travelers. Minister Jobe's vision includes leveraging media influence to transform existing friendships into tangible economic benefits through increased tourism. His remarks show a strategic approach to engaging key stakeholders, including the press, to achieve shared prosperity and deeper collaboration between the two nations. By encouraging wider coverage of African tourism stories, particularly those showcasing cultural heritage and authentic experiences, the minister aims to inspire more Nigerians to explore The Gambia and other African destinations.
