WAVE Establishes Community Peace Structure in Kerr Mot Ali

The Women Association for Women and victims' empowerment (WAVE) established a community peace structure in Kerr Mot Ali, a village in the Upper Saloum District of the Central River Region, on Monday. This significant initiative aims to foster peace and reconciliation within the community, addressing long-standing tensions and promoting harmonious coexistence. This development signals WAVE's commitment to empowering local residents and proactively addressing issues affecting victims of conflict and displacement. The newly formed structure is expected to provide a key platform for dialogue and conflict resolution, thereby contributing to enhanced stability and mutual understanding in the area. Its establishment marks a proactive step towards building a more resilient and peaceful community.

Inaugural Meeting Convened

The inaugural meeting for the community peace structure was convened at the Governor’s office in the Central River Region, showing the official recognition and support for this peace initiative. Discussions during the event involved heated exchanges regarding methods of conflict resolution and specific land-related disputes that have historically divided the community. These frank and open discussions, while intense, were a necessary step in bringing underlying issues to the forefront. The peace committee, established as part of this initiative, comprises members drawn from the two communities involved in the disputes – specifically, both the exiled Kerr Mot Ali residents and the current residents. This inclusive structure aims to provide a formal and representative platform for addressing ongoing tensions and fostering constructive dialogue between the groups, ensuring that all voices are heard and considered in the resolution process.

Peace Committee's Mandate

The meeting assembled a diverse group of participants, ensuring broad representation and full engagement in the peace process. Attendees included government dignitaries, representatives from various civil society organizations, members of the Ndigal Sect, and individuals representing the current residents of Kerr Mot Ali. This gathering sought to ensure that all key stakeholders had a voice in shaping the future of community peace. The newly formed committee is tasked with advancing full efforts for community peacebuilding, focusing on sustainable and long-term solutions. Its mandate specifically includes preventing future conflicts within the area, aiming to establish lasting stability through structured dialogue and effective resolution mechanisms. By bringing together diverse perspectives, the committee endeavors to create a strong framework for peace that addresses the root causes of conflict and promotes mutual respect.

Community Voices Heard

The newly established peace structure aims to restore peace between exiled residents of Kerr Mot Ali and the community's current inhabitants in the Upper Saloum of the Central River Region. This objective is central to the initiative, seeking to bridge divides and heal past grievances. Mr. Bakary Camara, Deputy Executive Secretary of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Secretariat (ADRS), noted the structure's key role in facilitating dialogue and mediating disputes. He emphasized that structured conversations are essential for overcoming historical rifts. Mr. Musa Seck, identified as a current resident of Kerr Mot Ali, participated actively in discussions regarding community stability, offering insights from the perspective of those presently living in the village. Yunusa Ceesay, an exiled resident of Kerr Mot Ali and a follower of the Ndigal Sect, emphasized the critical importance of the committee's work in achieving lasting reconciliation. Ceesay stated, "If the committee can help both communities listen to each other, resolve disputes peacefully, and prevent misunderstandings, it will lay the foundation for lasting peace and coexistence with full government support. Impartiality, trust and honesty are key." His words showed the necessity of transparent and fair processes to build confidence among all parties involved. The successful implementation of the committee's mandate is seen as vital for the future harmony and development of Kerr Mot Ali.
