Senegal's government has nominated Birame Diop for the position of Ecowas President. The nomination was announced in a statement issued Monday by Senegal’s Ministry of African Integration, Foreign Affairs and Senegalese Abroad. The Ministry stated, "Should he be confirmed at the July 2026 Summit, he would bring to the office a rare blend of operational credibility, diplomatic temperament and institutional vision — an asset to the community and its member states." It added that Diop possesses "a remarkable record of service to Senegal, to Africa, and to the international community." The Ministry also noted, "This candidature reflects Senegal’s desire to place at the disposal of our sub-regional community a figure of great merit, recognised for his leadership, his integrity, his command experience, and his profound knowledge of issues of peace, security, governance and regional integration."

Diop's Extensive Military Career

General Birame Diop has previously served in several prominent military roles, including Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, Chief of the President of the Republic’s Military Staff, and Chief of Staff of the Air Force. Diop, who is 65 years old, has an extensive educational background in military affairs. He is a graduate of the Royal Air School in Marrakesh, Morocco, having pursued early training there. His studies continued at Air University in the United States, further broadening his strategic and operational expertise. Additionally, Diop refined his command capabilities at the École de Guerre in Paris, a prestigious institution known for advanced military education.

Diplomatic and Academic Pursuits

General Birame Diop is currently engaged in academic pursuits focused on diplomacy and international relations. His ongoing studies reflect a commitment to deepening his understanding of global affairs beyond his extensive military background. This academic work is part of a broader profile that Senegal's Ministry of African Integration, Foreign Affairs and Senegalese Abroad noted in its nomination statement. The Ministry noted that Diop possesses "a remarkable record of service to Senegal, to Africa, and to the international community," further stating that his candidature reflects "Senegal’s desire to place at the disposal of our sub-regional community a figure of great merit, recognised for his leadership, his integrity, his command experience, and his profound knowledge of issues of peace, security, governance and regional integration." His current academic endeavors align with the Ministry's description of his full expertise.

Senegal's Endorsement

Birame Diop, a retired air force general, currently serves as Senegal's Minister of the Armed Forces. His nomination for the presidency of the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas) Commission was announced by Senegal's government. President Bassirou Faye made the decision to put forward Diop for the prominent regional role. The move signals Senegal's intention to contribute significantly to the leadership of Ecowas, an organization focused on regional integration and stability. Diop's background as a former Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces and his current ministerial position show his extensive experience in both military and governmental affairs. This experience is expected to be a key factor should he be confirmed for the Ecowas presidency.

Looking Ahead to Summit

The nomination precedes the Summit of Ecowas Heads of State and Government, where it will be considered for approval. That summit is currently scheduled to take place in July 2026.
