A new political controversy has emerged in Gambia regarding President Adama Barrow’s potential bid for a third term in office. This development follows a recent press conference held at the Bakau Community Centre by a movement advocating for Barrow to publicly state he will not seek another term. The event at the Bakau Community Centre noted growing pressure on the president concerning future elections.

Opposition Demands Term Limits

Members of the “No To Third Term Movement,” including Alagie Mamadi Kurang of the opposition UDP, publicly urged President Adama Barrow not to seek re-election. The movement’s advocates maintain that a head of state who respects term limits does not require a specific constitutional clause to enforce such a decision. This position shows a broader debate within Gambia regarding presidential tenure. Opponents of a third term for President Barrow emphasize the importance of political leaders voluntarily adhering to democratic principles, irrespective of constitutional provisions. They argue that a commitment to term limits reflects good governance and prevents potential abuses of power. The UDP, a prominent opposition party, has been vocal in its stance against any attempts to extend the presidential mandate beyond the current two-term limit.

Constitutional Ambiguities Fuel Debate

The 1997 Constitution of Gambia does not explicitly restrict the number of terms a president may serve, creating a legal vacuum that fuels the current debate. This constitutional ambiguity has allowed for differing interpretations regarding presidential tenure. Earlier attempts to introduce a new constitution, which included provisions for presidential term limits, ultimately failed. The rejection of these proposed constitutional changes means that the existing 1997 document remains the primary legal framework, leaving the question of term limits open to interpretation and political contestation.

Pro-Barrow Camp Mobilizes Support

The “Third Term For Barrow” camp has declared its readiness to mobilize broad public support to defend President Adama Barrow and the constitution. The group claims thousands of Gambians stand behind President Barrow and are prepared to resist efforts to override what they describe as the people’s will.

The “Third Term For Barrow” camp stated, "We call on all stakeholders, political parties, civil society, and citizens, to reject inflammatory rhetoric and violent threats. Our nation’s future depends on our commitment to peaceful, lawful, and democratic means of resolving national issues. The rule of law must remain our guiding principle, and the sovereignty of the Gambian people must be exercised through transparent and lawful elections." The camp further asserted, "The voice of the people is clear: they stand firmly behind the President, and any attempts to undermine their democratic willpower will be met with resolute and peaceful resistance. The Gambian people’s support for President Barrow is a testament to the progress and stability our nation seeks to uphold."

Calls for Calm Amidst Tensions

Critics contend President Adama Barrow’s pursuit of a third term undermines democratic progress, particularly given his earlier pledge to serve only three years. The 2024 draft constitution, which reportedly included presidential term limits, was rejected in parliament by National Assembly Members from the opposition UDP.
