The NPP-led alliance recently expressed grave concern regarding Deputy Speaker Seedy Njie’s tribal comments and his insinuation of influencing President Adama Barrow’s appointment decisions. These remarks prompted the alliance to address their potential impact on the political landscape in The Gambia, emphasizing the vital importance of national unity and constitutional principles. The NPP-led alliance unequivocally stated its "grave concern" over these recent tribal comments and the insinuation of undue influence on the President's executive functions.

The alliance acknowledged that Mr. Njie's statements had caused legitimate concerns and carried significant political weight. A statement from the NPP-led alliance indicated their apprehension over the nature of the remarks and their implications for presidential authority and national unity. The NPP-led Grand Alliance Secretariat noted that it had thoroughly read and listened to Seedy Njie’s remarks, recognizing the legitimate anguish they have provoked across the country, including among Mandinkas. The alliance emphasized the importance of maintaining an impartial and unified political environment, free from divisive rhetoric.

Clarifying Executive Authority

The NPP-led alliance clarified the scope of presidential authority, stating that the President is the head of state, government, and the commander-in-chief of The Gambia Armed Forces. The alliance emphasized that under the Constitution of The Gambia 1997, executive authority is vested exclusively and without diminution in President Adama Barrow. This means appointments, promotions, deployments, and all decisions affecting the public service are made solely by the president. The alliance showed that this constitutional mandate ensures the integrity and independence of presidential decisions.

The NPP-led Grand Alliance Secretariat affirmed, "Appointments, promotions, deployments, and decisions affecting the public service are made by the president, guided by law, merit, and the national interest, and by nothing and no one else." The alliance further stressed that no individual holds, or has ever held, any personal influence capable of overriding, directing, or subverting the president’s constitutional judgment. The Secretariat showed that President Barrow operates under constitutional principles, ensuring that governance is based on established legal frameworks and the welfare of all citizens. "No individual holds, or has ever held, any personal influence capable of overriding, directing, or subverting the president’s constitutional judgment. The president does not govern by the influence of subordinates. He governs by law, by principle, and by his own sovereign discretion vested in him by the people of this republic," the NPP-led Grand Alliance Secretariat stated, clarifying the immutable nature of presidential power. This statement reinforced the principle that the President's decisions are his alone, guided by the highest standards of national interest and legal compliance.

Addressing Tribal Concerns

The NPP-led alliance affirmed that no ethnic group in The Gambia is experiencing persecution, demotion, or systematic disadvantage under the current Barrow government. The alliance stated that any claims to the contrary are inconsistent with the established record, policies, and commitments of the NPP-led Alliance. The NPP-led alliance explicitly stated that no ethnic group in The Gambia is a subject of persecution, demotion, or systematic disadvantage under the Barrow government, firmly refuting any assertions to the contrary. Any such assertion, the alliance maintained, is irreconcilable with the documented record, the stated policy, and the unwavering commitments of the NPP-led Alliance to inclusivity and equality.

Addressing specific concerns, the alliance assured Mandinka citizens that they are central to the government's operations and that their contributions are significant and unquestionable. The NPP-led alliance extended this assurance specifically to its Mandinka brothers and sisters, stating unequivocally that they are at the very centre of the government's efforts and their contributions are beyond measure and question. The NPP-led alliance emphasized that its enduring strength has always stemmed from its collective commitment to a Gambia where all citizens are treated equally. This unified approach, according to the alliance, ensures that the nation belongs to everyone without distinction, fostering a sense of shared ownership and national pride. The alliance's strength, it noted, has always resided in its collective embrace of a Gambia that belongs equally to all its citizens, irrespective of their background.

The alliance further asserted that this inclusive stance will position them strongly for the December 2026 presidential election, fostering unity and moral authority. This embrace, the alliance believes, will carry them to the upcoming December 2026 presidential election in a position of strength, unity, and undeniable moral authority, built on a foundation of national cohesion.

Alliance's Stance and Future

The NPP-led Grand Alliance Secretariat stated it recognized the legitimate anguish provoked across the country, including among Mandinkas, by Seedy Njie’s remarks. The Secretariat affirmed that Mr. Njie’s statements, to the extent they suggested otherwise, do not reflect the position, policy, or values of the NPP-led alliance. "Seedy Njie’s remarks, to the extent that they suggest otherwise, do not reflect the position, the policy, or the values of the NPP-led alliance," the Secretariat declared. "They do not represent the voice of this secretariat. They do not represent the vision of the president, and they stand in fundamental contradiction to the alliance’s cardinal principles of national unity, inclusive governance, and the equal dignity of every Gambian citizen without regard to ethnicity, region, religion, or political affiliation." This clear disavowal shows the alliance's commitment to its foundational principles.

The alliance urged the public not to judge its collective stance based on the subjective misstatement of one individual. The NPP-led Grand Alliance Secretariat stated, "The utterances were a serious error of judgment. Everyone makes mistakes. The error has been acknowledged and its lessons learnt. We must now move beyond it. The NPP-led alliance represents the best interests of The Gambia and continues to advance a consistent policy of inclusion, unity, cooperation, peace and stability." The alliance specifically urged the public not to judge the alliance on the subjective misstatement of one person, acknowledging that such errors, while serious, do not define the collective. The alliance's embrace of national unity and inclusivity, it noted, won the confidence of the nation in 2016 and again in 2021. "The strength of the NPP-led alliance has always resided in our collective embrace of a Gambia that belongs equally to all its citizens. That embrace is what won the confidence of this nation in 2016 and again in 2021," the Secretariat concluded, noting its historical mandate and ongoing commitment to a united Gambia.
