Footballer Sadio Mané laid the foundation stone on Saturday, September 19, for a new agro-industrial park in his hometown of Bambali, Senegal. The facility, named SM10 Agro, represents a significant investment of 11.7 billion CFA francs, approximately US$20 million, funded entirely by Mané from his personal wealth. Bambali is located in Moyenne-Casamance, a region renowned for its prolific mango production. During the ceremony, Mané articulated his vision, stating, "I want the fruits of the land to stay here," emphasizing the importance of local processing for the region's agricultural produce. This initiative marks a key step towards economic development and sustainability in his community.
Project Details and Scope
Construction of the SM10 Agro park is anticipated to span 18 months, indicating a rapid development timeline for such a substantial project. The full plan encompasses 500 hectares designated for orchards, which will supply the processing facilities directly. Alongside these extensive agricultural plots, the development includes four advanced processing units. These facilities are meticulously designed to manage an impressive annual capacity of 8,500 tonnes of produce, transforming raw agricultural goods into value-added products. Upon initial operations, the project is expected to create more than 1,000 direct employment opportunities, providing a significant boost to the local economy and offering stable jobs for residents of Bambali and surrounding areas.
The agro-industrial park will also integrate a dedicated training centre and a research operation, which will be situated strategically adjacent to the processing factories. This co-location aims to foster innovation and skill development, ensuring that local workers are equipped with the necessary expertise for modern agricultural processing. While the region is widely known for its abundant mango production, the park's scope extends beyond a single crop, with plans to process other fruits. Guava, specifically, has been mentioned for inclusion alongside mangoes, diversifying the park's output and resilience. The full plan aims to establish a strong and diversified local processing infrastructure within Bambali, reducing reliance on external markets for processing and creating a self-sustaining agricultural ecosystem.
Addressing Local Challenges
A significant portion of Bambali's mango crop currently perishes annually due to a critical lack of adequate storage facilities and an insufficient number of available buyers, according to various reports. This leads to considerable economic losses for local farmers and limits the region's agricultural potential. Sadio Mané's initiative directly aims to mitigate this pressing issue by enabling the local processing of the fruit into valuable products such as purée, dried mango, and mango butter. These processed mango products are intended for both domestic sale within Senegal, catering to local demand, and for export markets, opening new avenues for international trade and revenue generation for the region. The project aligns smoothly with the ongoing philanthropic efforts of the 34-year-old footballer, who received the prestigious Socrates Prize in 2022 in recognition of his extensive social work and commitment to community development. The agro-industrial park seeks to transform long-standing local agricultural challenges into tangible economic opportunities, fostering prosperity and stability for the community.
Mané's Community Investments
Sadio Mané has consistently demonstrated a profound commitment to his hometown, investing in several vital community projects in Bambali over the past decade. These contributions include funding the construction of a mosque, a school, a hospital, and a petrol station, all of which serve to improve the quality of life and provide essential services for local residents. More recently, last November, Mané also opened a bakery in Bambali, further diversifying local businesses and creating additional employment. These initiatives show his dedication to giving back to the community that shaped him.
Beyond his philanthropic endeavors, Mané is a celebrated figure in football. The accomplished footballer recently announced his retirement from international competition with the Africa Cup of Nations following the 2025 tournament. He holds an illustrious record for Senegal's national team, having scored an impressive 52 goals and provided 31 assists, more than any other player in the nation's history. His remarkable career achievements include finishing second in the highly coveted 2022 Ballon d’Or, a testament to his exceptional talent and dedication. Before making a move to Saudi Arabia, Mané played for prominent European clubs such as Liverpool and Bayern Munich, where he achieved considerable success and earned global recognition.
